REAL ID at SLAC
Starting May 7, 2025, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) will begin full enforcement of the Real ID Act, which means everyone coming on site to SLAC will need a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license or another acceptable form of identification to access the site. This change has been delayed multiple times, but the new deadline is now official, and it's crucial that everyone requiring access to SLAC are prepared.
What Is a REAL ID?
The REAL ID is a federally compliant driver’s license or identification card that meets minimum security standards established by Congress following the 9/11 Commission’s recommendations. These standards aim to:
- Prevent identity fraud
- Strengthen national security
- Establish consistent identification standards across all U.S. states and territories
REAL IDs typically have a star in the upper right-hand corner of the card, which distinguishes them from standard, non-compliant licenses.
Why Is REAL ID a Requirement?
After the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, Congress passed the REAL ID Act in 2005, to improve the reliability and accuracy of state-issued identification. The goal was to close security loopholes that allowed individuals to obtain fake IDs easily.
Beginning in May 2025, SLAC will no longer accept non-compliant licenses as valid identification for accessing SLAC.
What Documents Do You Need to Get a REAL ID?
To obtain a REAL ID, you’ll need to visit your local DMV and provide documentation that proves:
- Full legal name
- Date of birth
- Social Security number
- Legal presence in the U.S. (such as a birth certificate, passport, or green card)
- Two proofs of current address (e.g., utility bill, rental agreement)
States may have slightly different requirements, so it’s best to check with your local DMV ahead of time.
